I’ve been told that “wfg” was an odd name for a girl to go by. Most of the people that see me using it these days have no idea how or why I go by it. I thought I’d take a moment to recall why I use it, for the fun of remembering the old days.
The name goes back further than my usernames on the Internet. If I go back to the true beginning, I return to an old boyfriend who nicknamed me “The Spanish Rose”. I was head over heels in love with all things Spanish in college, from the classes I took to my very Spanish last name. He was head over heels in love with Broadway and I believe there’s a song or character in some play that he got the name from, possibly Bye Bye Birdie. >Between our two loves, I was given my nickname!
So, when I first started chatting on an old unix based chat haven called The Opium Den, I used “The Spanish Rose” as my handle. That quickly got shortened by others to “rose” and soon I became “rosie”. That suited me just fine, although I was kind of sad to lose the Spanish part.
Sometime in my second year chatting on OD, a friend and I were on late one night and she laughed and called me “wicked flower girl” after I typed something she found amusing. That quick joking comment spawned my new identity.
“wicked flower girl” was quickly replaced by other haveners who found it too long to type out. Instead, they called me “wfg”. It was amusing for the fact that the oldbies quickly forgot why that was my name and the newbies were always trying to figure out what it stood for. It seemed like there was a great mystery around me, just because my name was an odd combination of consonants.
Since then I’ve used wfg for any number of usernames on any number of sites. It continues to be my favorite username, for its short simplicity and the fact that it comes with a bit of a mystery.
