Virtual Wordsmith has tagged me with a writing meme. (Thanks so much, Lynn.) I’m supposed to write about my greatest strengths in writing. This is my first time doing a writing meme…we’ll see what happens!
I think I’m very good at descriptive writing. I enjoy finding words that make a big impact or that can make me feel as if I’m standing right there experiencing it all. Why use a junk word when you can use a descriptive word? Why tell how something feels when you can show instead?
I enjoy finding the natural rhythm in the words I’m writing. I like to think I’m good at that. I used to write a lot of poetry, although I haven’t done much lately. Sometimes I look at the prose I’ve written and thought it should go into poem form, though.
I’m good at putting personal experiences into words, even difficult ones. I’ve had too many hard experiences that needed writing to work through them.
I’m good at tightening sentences and ideas when I’m rewriting. This includes reorganizing the whole piece to flow better. I attribute this to the way my high school taught us to write…it was very intensive and learned in just about all of my classes, not just English class.
All of these can be weaknesses…sometimes I overedit my ideas and kill the creative flow. Sometimes I get so lost in the descriptions that I forget about the purpose of what I’m writing. Sometimes I worry so much about the rhythm that I use words that are less than ideal simply because they fit better. Sometimes I ramble on and on, trying to convey all the ideas crowding in my head.
So, now that I’ve examined my own writing, I’ll tag at least a couple more people. I haven’t “met” too many writers that blog…
I’m tagging:
The Undertoad
LaniePainie
Toforama’s Heaven of Hell
