I like applesauce. It’s healthy, it’s sweet (even when not sweetened) and it goes great with grilled cheese sandwiches.

I used to eat applesauce with pork chops when I was growing up. I didn’t like the pork chops all that much and the applesauce made them tolerable.

When I was 9, we lived in Maryland for our first autumn. We visited the apple orchard, collected our apples and made…..applesauce. Homemade applesauce is heavenly. I could be wrong, but I think we only did that a time or two…but boy, I loved those jars of applesauce and applebutter that were stored in the basement!

I love cookies made with applesauce. Here’s a recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook:

Applesauce-Oatmeal Cookies
Prep: 15 minutes Bake: 8 minutes per batch Oven: 375 degrees F
These are Lowfat, and if you want low cholesterol, substitute two egg whites for the whole egg.

1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups rolled oats

1. In medium mixing bowl beat butter or margarine with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar, cinnmon, and baking soda. Beat til combined, scraping sides of bowl. Beat in egg and applesauce til combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can wtih the mixer. Stir in remaining flour and the rolled oats.

2. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or till lightly browned. Transfer cookies to a wire rack and let cool. Makes about 30 cookies.

Now that’s some yummy goodness. I love applesauce. All I buy these days is unsweetened. Who needs the extra sugar or *gag* artificial sweetners?? Applesauce is already sweet enough!

Talking about apples and baking leads me to thinking about Dutch Apple Pie….yum. Another favorite use for apples. There have been several birthdays I wanted nothing to do with cake and so got apple pie with a crumb topping instead. Served warm with some natural vanilla ice cream….that’s just my idea of delicious!

Is it any wonder I need to lose weight? Start with something as simple and wholesome as Applesauce and I end up discussing dessert!

While Toph recommended I write about Applesauce, as there isn’t enough applesauce in literature, I think I’ll have to pass.

I know I do babble on about the strangest things sometimes, but Applesauce?? Nobody wants to hear about applesauce, do they?

Do they?

Do you?

What do you want to hear about??
