Who knew that Toph’s random comment about Applesauce would start me on an alphabet quest? The whole family is getting into it, now. Last night at dinner, I asked for suggestions for F. The list wasn’t all that long…F is apparently another tough one.
French toast, Frittata, French Fries…they were all suggested, along with several others. It was getting downright crazy with some of the suggestions, so we had to call a halt eventually.
I love French toast. My mom taught me to make it, although I still pull out my recipe book every time I make it. I only do it now when we have a loaf of Italian or French bread, or some homemade bread to dip because Toph likes it made with thick slices so that the egg doesn’t soak through all the bread. I used to think it was too greasy…I remember dreading having it for breakfast when I was a teenager. Now, I love it though. I wonder if I make it differently than my mom now?
Frittata has a lot of memories attached. My dad makes this occasionally, another family recipe he learned from his mom. Potatoes and onions with eggs and cheese, sometimes with sausage too. I have yet to successfully make this though. I’m not patient enough with the eggs or something. heh. I end up with scrambled eggs mixed with hashbrowns, or something….neither cooked to the best they can be. Same thing happens when I try omelets, so I usually just avoid calling it an omelet and saying it’s scrambled eggs with toppings!
French Fries….well, I personally think McD’s has the best among the fast food chains. What do you think? And if you don’t mind the transfats and shopping at Wally World, their frozen shoe string fries for 50 cents aren’t bad. My favorite french fries of all are sweet potato french fries, though. I’ve never successfully made them at home. Last night I skinned and cubed a sweet potato and baked it with olive oil, salt and pepper. It wasn’t bad. No crunch, but still yummy. Not sweet potato french fries, though.
Do you fix any yummy ‘F’ foods? Any recipes to share?
