Chocolate!!!!!! Woohoo!!!!

Wait. That wasn’t the right answer, was it? hrm.

Oh yeah. Valentine’s Day means celebrating love.

Somebody last week said to me and my kids that she didn’t understand why kids in Elementary School celebrated Valentine’s Day since it was more a holiday for grownups. I had to grin, because I know that Valentine’s Day in elementary school is all about the commercialization of a holiday!

J decided she had to buy valentines this year, rather than make them at home. It isn’t cool to give out homemade cards, you know. Well, call me uncool, then, because I spent yesterday MAKING valentines for my husband and children. And if I have time today, there’s a project I want to make for my kids as gifts. Yeah, yeah, I put it off until today. Didn’t I mention that I’m a procrastinator?

Toph and I actually get to go out on a date this weekend! We’re leaving the kids at home and getting out! We’ve opted for an afternoon date. We’re such romantics! heh. We’ll probably end up browsing at the mall, shopping for the chest freezer we’re planning to buy soon, and then having dinner out. If you don’t have kids, you may not realize just how special it is to browse at the mall without kids, or to eat at a fancy restaurant without kids. Seasoned parents KNOW!

I am a romantic, despite all appearances with our date plans. I grew up watching my father woo and court my mom, even after 20-some years of marriage. He brought flowers home regularly, he’d whisk her away for a weekend in a cozy bed-and-breakfast, and he flirted with her all the time.

My own husband goes more for the romantic surprises, done when they are least expected. Holidays such as today will get a nod from him, but the romance is saved for days when I won’t be looking for it. If I suggest any gifts I’d like, I’m sure not to get those. If I’ve asked for them, the surprise is gone!

Today, Valentine’s Day, used to celebrate love even if just to spike sales, I’ll probably see chocolate coming home. That’s what I’ve been told to expect.

How will you be celebrating Valentine’s Day?
